We have enjoyed working with Michael Mushak for almost 20 years, on dozens of projects on properties in Bedford NY, Pawling NY, and New York City. The projects included master plans, driveways, shade trees, an apple orchard, shrub borders, flower borders, terraces, and a beautiful one-acre wildlife pond that he located perfectly in the view from our 1870 farmhouse. In New York City, Michael designed a lushly planted penthouse terrace and a classic formal courtyard which we enjoyed for many years. His work is consistently of a high quality, and his crew is always courteous, hard-working, and professional.

We would recommend Michael Mushak and his crew at Tuliptree Site Design to anyone planning a new landscape project. He has been helping us for 12 years,  on both our former home and our new home which we completed several years ago. Michael's vision of an eco-friendly and beautiful landscape was executed flawlessly, on time and on budget. The initial work on our new home included a beautiful stone-paved entry courtyard surrounded by lush plantings, and behind the house romantic seating areas with great views of the wildflower meadow, hillside plantings, and willow trees he installed. Last year we had Michael design and install an English-style kitchen garden with lattice walls, gravel paths, and raised beds, which provided us with an abundance of fresh vegetables and cut flowers. No matter what time of year, we are surrounded with natural beauty and color. Now we just stay home a lot more!

We cannot say enough good things about Michael Mushak and his hard-working crew at Tuliptree. We have worked with them for over 10 years on many projects around our 5-acre property. We recently completed a new pool that Michael designed, and his crew came in and planted beautiful borders of flowering shrubs, ornamental grasses, screening trees, and shade trees. There is always something in bloom, and we probably spend too much time at the pool as a result!  Anyone we have recommended Michael to over the years, and there have been many including family and friends, have been pleased with his design abilities and his strong work ethic.

I have worked with Michael Mushak on four major landscape projects since 1997, which included:

  1. The renovation of a landscape surrounding a 1910 historic home in Bronxville, NY, including new driveway, drainage, fencing, walkways, terraces, lighting, and plantings.

  2. A master plan for a 5 acre property in Martha's Vineyard, including new driveway, fencing, walls, walkways, pool, deck, and plantings.

  3. A master plan for a 22 acre property in Martha's Vineyard, surrounding an important 1968 modernist house, which included the design of new structures, driveways, walls, fencing, pool, deck, renovation of a Japanese-style garden, and the successful relocation of a  stand of mature specimen trees to make room for a new structure.

  4. A penthouse terrace in Greenwich Village, NYC, including layout and plantings.

As a project manager specializing in high-end residential projects around the country, I have had the opportunity to work with many design professionals in many different fields. The four projects I worked with Michael on were each very challenging, and every time he was able to see the big picture with his confident vision and design beautiful and cost-efficient solutions. The results were always dramatic, yet never overdone. In fact, "classic" would be a good word to describe his work.

Michael Mushak has helped us, and the many members of our family and friends who we have recommended him to, for over 15 years to improve our properties with innovative  landscape designs. As just one example, a few years ago he designed a lap pool and spa for us on a challenging steep hillside, and integrated it beautifully with large boulders, stone steps, and plantings into the surrounding natural landscape. The rustic fencing and subtle lighting scheme just added to its charm. Our family has spent many enjoyable times in this inspiring setting, and we will always appreciate his hard work and dedication in helping us achieve our vision.

We recommend Tuliptree Site Design, Inc., and Michael Mushak to anyone who wants a beautiful and functional landscape surrounding their home. We have had the pleasure of working with Michael over the last 15 years on two different properties, our former and now our current home. He has designed driveways, play areas, kitchen gardens, major tree plantings, flower borders, and a beautiful pool for us. His designs are colorful, practical, tastefully simple, and affordable.

When Michael Mushak arrived at my house for the first time a few years ago, after a friend recommended I call him to help with my disastrous yard after a new pool was constructed, he wasted no time in sharing his ideas. He immediately spotted my eclectic collection of Indonesian artwork and furniture, and suggested we design a beautiful landscape around this theme. A week later he showed up with his hard-working crew and a fleet of trucks. A few days later, a miracle had occurred in my yard! He created new spaces and vistas, screening the areas that needed it, and even stood in my kitchen to make sure the views were as good as they were from the outside. Another miracle was the bill - he did it well under what we had budgeted because he was able to re-use all my existing shrubs and trees, and just move them around like furniture! I have used Michael and his crew at tuliptree for many other projects since then, and he has always exceeded our expectations with his creative abilities.

As an interior designer and project manager, I understand how important both imagination and execution are to a successful project. Michael Mushak has the rare ability to not only think outside the box when asked for a design solution,  but to also execute his highly stylish yet understated  solutions both on-time and on-budget.  I know this because I have had the pleasure of working with him on four  large projects over the last  10 years in Pound Ridge and Bedford, NY.  Whether it was the 10-acre natural property of sculpted woods and meadows  surrounding a 1972 Edward Larrabee Barnes modernist landmark, or the more refined  traditional terraces and gardens surrounding a restored 1840 farmhouse, Michael's designs have a singular quality about them that speaks to his great mastery of design concepts and plant material. And he dedicates himself to all aspects of his projects.  He carefully supervised the grading and planting around a pool he designed, creating a restrained composition that inspires with its minimal simplicity.  I once watched him crawl across a neglected hillside weeding an ancient moss-covered rock outcropping, which he exposed as a beautiful natural feature with so little as a bit of careful editing.  Another time he carefully positioned huge boulders and large evergreen trees with the help of his crew and  earth-moving  equipment.  At any scale he works at, it is this hands-on and Zen-like attention to detail that I, as a designer myself, most appreciate. His work speaks for itself.

We have worked with Michael Mushak and his crew for almost a decade on many projects around our 6-acre property.  He most recently finished a renovation of our backyard with bold new plantings of flowering shrubs and trees, and a romantic seating area.  Not only does Michael do exquisite work, he always stays within the budget, so the only surprise is how much the finished job exceeds our expectations!  We highly recommend Michael and Tuliptree for any landscape project.
